So, recently I was asked to isolate for 10 days from the Track, Trace and Protect app, a first I thought meh, fair enough but thought about it a little more, and changed my mind on it all.
Who is the app protecting,
According to Pew Research, only 53% of people over 65 use a smartphone, people over 65 are in one of the most vulnerable age groups for contracting the Coronavirus with complications. In comparison to people aged 18-29 where 96% have a smartphone.
Does the app work fairly?
The app does a great job of protecting those who use the app and have a smartphone. But the app only takes into account hard physical data, such as distance and contact time with other users. This is great, but in some cases, there are factors that are put in place to restrict the spread of Covid, that the app does not take into account. In my case, the app detected contact while in a pub in Swansea Wind Street. The pub had placed shielding between all the tables, forced table service and had people sitting back to back. The app does not take any of this into account. In almost all hospitality settings, people are not social distancing, however, they are in isolated cubicles, meaning only contact with their table. Just to add salt to the wound, only to out of the 3 with the app active got the notice to isolate.
So, i recieved the notification after traveling home from Swansea from Uni to see my Family. Before traveling, i had 2 negative covid tests from the Uni, and anouther negative test once home. But, after 3 negative tests since the supposed interation, i still need to isolate for 8 days. Can someone please explain this to me? I’m allowed to travel home to meet my family while potentially carrying the virus (according to the app) but not allowed to return to isolate in Swansea. This whole thing does not make any sense to me.
Yes, i am isolating because the app asked me to, but it seems non sensical to me. This is probably why the rate of infection is so high in hospitality settings, because the app only takes raw, hard data and does not take into account measures that have been implimented such as safety screens between tables, and people not mixing between groups. Literally, the only reason you can leave your table is to go to the toilet, for a smoke or if you are leaving.
P.S, I’m not a scientist, so don’t fully understand the science, this is only an oppinion.
